The delight of chaos packaging

If you’re going to the store, grab me a box of water. And a tub of tampons. Maybe a metal jug of gin or a pump bottle of electrolyte mix.

These oddball formats are being dubbed chaos packaging – selling products in containers that are normally foreign to the category. The result is surprising, delightful, and, most importantly, noticeable.

For some reason, all summer long I kept running across the famous Spanish potato chips in a paint can, Bonilla a la Vista Patatas Fritas. At least two recent conferences I’ve attended only had Boxed Water on hand. Vacation’s sunscreen in a whipped cream can was unavoidable on TikTok for a few weeks.

Trendy olive oil brand Graza basically built its entire business on the back of its iconic, unique, and charming squeeze bottle. It’s a functional format for sure, but more importantly, it is something totally different and eye-catching on a shelf of traditional glass bottles and metal jugs. Then, in May this year, they introduced another weird form factor: olive oil refills via aluminum soda cans.

In Graza’s success, you can see the two reasons why this trend is having a moment. First, these unconventional formats are often more practical than they seem at first glance. As you’ll see in any professional kitchen, a squeeze bottle gives you more control over your oil (or any liquid). It won’t shatter when dropped, and it’s lighter and easier to move around in bulk. Those canned potato chips won’t break as easily as a regular bag of Lays, and that sunscreen won’t leak all over your bag. Just because we’ve packaged something one way for years doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the best way to do things.

Second, these packages are salient. They shake us awake just a little bit, and they stand out in contrast to everything else competing for attention on the same shelf. When you scan the liquor store, every other gin is in a glass bottle, but wait, what’s that? It’s Departed Spirits, standing apart in a metal tin more reminiscent of motor oil than a cocktail ingredient. Maybe you buy it, maybe you won’t – but at least you noticed it.

As with everything in marketing, this tactic will work until it doesn’t. Just as every self-help book now has a title full of curse words, Graza won’t stand out nearly as much on a shelf full of squeeze bottles, and Bonilla a la Vista will be lost in the noise if the chip aisle starts to look like a Benjamin Moore. We only notice what is different.

And another bit of tempering here: A 2022 paper in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services found that, at least in the wine category, “non-traditional packaging, in the form of an aluminum can (vs. traditional 750 ml glass bottle), has a negative impact on consumer evaluations of product appeal, which leads to lower taste perceptions.”

This tactic is not a silver bullet. Chaos packaging works when it delightfully hijacks your attention – but that benefit can be easily squandered if the experience of using the product falls flat. Use it wisely.
